Is this ART?
Is this CREATIVE ACTIVISM?
I would have to say yes to both questions. While the first picture isn’t necessarily very good it is someone’s self-expression using spray paint. The second picture is creative and is highlighting the issue of facing many people of being homeless or vulnerably housed and having to sleep rough.
But is it an effective campaign? Encouraging people to sleep “rough” for a night to experience something that most people desperately try and avoid. All while listening to live music and comedy? Not such an authentic experience. Charities like Centrepoint, Keyhouse and The Rock Trust in Edinburgh do vital work with young homeless people. Is this the best way to raise awareness of the struggles the young people they help face? Or is it a sad sign of the times that vital services are underfunded with the public overwhelmed with possible causes to support? And campaigns like this are the only way to gain the public’s attention?
What do you think?
